Summertime [childhood music]

Summertime, and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich
And your mama's good lookin'
So hush, little baby
Don't you cry...

Whilst lying in the sun today, I remembered this song, and how much I used to love singing it. I then realised it wasn't in my iTunes library, and then bought the whole Glory of Gershwin CD that we have at home. This is what I spent my childhood listening to. Obviously, I did the Spice Girl/B*Witched/A1/Westlife/Boyzone/911 thing too, but this is the stuff I listened to with my parents.

This is the stuff we'd put on the hi-fi in the summer, set the speakers outside, sing along and dance into the evening to. Music in my family was always more of a summer thing, and still is, really!

I know a lot of people who were brought up on Led Zep, Dire Straits, and other assorted cool bands. Maybe the stuff we listened to (The Beatles, ELO, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Santana...) wasn't quite as cool, but damn...they're good songs, and it's the stuff my parents listened to before my sister and I came along, which makes me smile :)

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday
Maybe not...
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday
Will be my good news day

Aw, I love parents' old music, however uncool it is to still listen to it, even without being forced to do so...

My parents have always listened to the widest variety of classical music, so no one piece really springs to mind. Now I feel like I'm missing out! There are some cassettes though, which we always took on holiday, stories and poems and songs like Flanders and Swann and some Michael Rosen stuff which makes us all laugh, still.

As for Summertime... I can't really sing that high for more than about a phrase at a time *envy*!

Jenny, I can't sing that high at all! I resigned myself to being an alto some time ago. It sounds as though your parents have similar musical tastes to mine - and I know exactly what you mean about always feeling like you're missing out on other people's cultural references/ experiences!

Jenny; the version of Summertime that I was listening to is sung by Peter Gabriel so is nice and low, but having said that, I can sing along to the other-version-that-you-mean-but-I-can't-remember-the-woman's-name...!

I have to belt it out though if I want to hit the top notes...

Cultural references should always be googled or youtubed or itunesed :)

I've never listened to much classical music; there's bits I like but they're probably the incredibly low-brow commercial stuff!

Do you still think of Corfu everytime you hear Dido too? And Coldplay is the holiday to canterbury when dad's car broke down. Peggy Lee, Fever, is Malta/Gozo.

Yep, exactly! Fever just totally reminds me of making those ancient tombs out of pistachio shells in Malta.

And Jack Johnson will always be Corfu too, but that was the one when you didn't come and Louise came with me!
